Lightera Demonstrates Multicore Fiber Technology Enabling Terabit-Scale Optical Transmission at OFC 2026

Los Angeles, CA, OFC 2026, Booth 829, March 16, 2026 – As artificial intelligence drives unprecedented demand for data center and cloud infrastructure, Lightera is advancing multicore fiber (MCF) technology to dramatically increase optical network capacity without expanding physical footprint. At the OFC Conference and Exhibition, Lightera is demonstrating its developmental four-core multicore fiber supporting interoperability demonstrations of 1.6 Tbps 2xDR4 and 100G/400G/800G ZR technologies—highlighting the potential of spatial-division multiplexing to scale next-generation AI networks.

Traditional single-core optical fiber has enabled decades of innovation, but simply increasing fiber counts is becoming impractical due to space, weight, and cable management constraints in modern data center environments. Lightera’s multicore fiber integrates multiple optical cores within a single fiber, unlocking a new dimension of spatial capacity while maintaining compatibility with existing deployment practices.

Lightera’s multicore fiber is featured in interoperability demonstrations coordinated through the Optical Internetworking Forum, a global consortium that accelerates the development and deployment of interoperable optical networking technologies.

In the 1.6 Tbps 2xDR4 demonstration, transceivers operate over a 500-meter Lightera cable containing four 4-core multicore fibers terminated with conventional LC duplex connectors. Each core carries 200 Gbps, enabling 1.6 Tbps of bi-directional data transmission within a single fiber.

The 100G/400G/800G ZR demonstration includes a 50 km spool of Lightera four-core multicore fiber, fusion-spliced using Lightera’s S-185 fusion splicing solution to fan-in/fan-out devices terminated with single-core fibers at each end.

The interoperability demonstration featuring Lightera’s multicore fiber solutions can be seen at OFC 2026 in booth #2017.
