Lightera Launches Two Next-Generation L-Band Erbium Fibers at OFC 2026, Enabling Higher Efficiency and Ultra-Compact Amplifier Designs
New inline and ultra-compact EDF platforms support modern high-fiber-count transmission systems and coherent pluggable optics with improved power efficiency and reduced nonlinear impairment
Los Angeles, CA, OFC 2026, Booth 829, March 16, 2026 – Lightera today announced the launch of two new advanced L-band erbium-doped fibers (EDF), engineered to meet the evolving demands of modern optical transmission networks and next-generation compact amplifier platforms. Introduced at OFC 2026, the new fibers deliver improved power efficiency, reduced nonlinear impairment, and significantly more compact amplifier design options for both inline and single-channel applications.
As transmission systems scale to higher fiber counts and tighter integration, amplifier efficiency, size, and thermal performance are increasingly critical. Building on Lightera’s long heritage in erbium fiber development, these new L-band EDF designs are purpose-built to support dense system architectures while maintaining excellent gain and conversion efficiency.
High-Efficiency L-Band EDF for Inline Amplifiers
The first new fiber is an enhanced L-band EDF optimized for inline amplifier deployments in modern transmission systems. It is designed to enable more compact amplifier packaging, improved power efficiency, and lower nonlinear impairment in high-capacity links.
The fiber features a 125 µm cladding diameter with 200 µm coating, supporting tighter packing and robust handling in dense amplifier assemblies. Higher-absorption variants enable shorter active fiber lengths, helping designers reduce module size and improve electrical-to-optical efficiency — increasingly important as network operators deploy higher fiber counts per system.
This new platform extends Lightera’s established inline EDF portfolio with updated performance tailored to space- and power-constrained transmission infrastructure.
Ultra-Compact L-Band EDF for Single-Channel and Pluggable Amplifiers
The second new fiber is an improved L-band EDF optimized for very compact single-channel amplifiers, including designs integrated into coherent pluggable modules such as OSFP and QSFP form factors.
To support extreme miniaturization, the fiber uses an 80 µm cladding diameter with 135 µm coating and enhanced absorption compared to current compact L-band EDF designs. The higher absorption enables significantly shorter fiber lengths while preserving strong power conversion efficiency — a key requirement for thermally and spatially constrained pluggable amplifier implementations.
This enables shorter amplifier builds, simplified packaging, and high performance in next-generation compact optical modules.
“Network operators and system designers are pushing L-band amplification into more space-constrained and power-sensitive environments, from dense inline amplifier chains to coherent pluggable modules,” said Rasmus Jensen, Product Market Manager, Specialty, Global Marketing & Sales, Lightera. “These two new erbium fibers give designers greater flexibility to reduce device size, increase packing density, and improve power efficiency while maintaining the high conversion performance required for modern transmission systems. They build directly on our EDF heritage and are purpose-designed for the next generation of compact optical amplifiers.”
Engineers and amplifier designers are invited to meet with Lightera specialists to review application fit and amplifier design considerations at Lightera Booth #829 at OFC 2026 in Los Angeles.
