Big data on the horizon from a new generation of distributed optical fiber sensors (APL Photon. 5, 020401 (2020); doi: 10.1063/1.5144123)

Optical fibers with enhanced scattering properties can provide distributed reflection signals beyond the limits set by Rayleigh scattering in traditional fibers. Enhanced fibers can be used in lengths from one meter in shape sensing applications to more than one kilometer in distributed acoustic sensing.
